Boom Festival is a biennial psychedelic and transformational culture festival held on the shores of a lake in Idanha-a-Nova, central Portugal, running since 1997. (formally closed 02/2026) Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures (GTDF) was a transnational, intergenerational research, arts, and ecology collective coordinated by Cash Ahenakew, a Cree scholar and Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Peoples' Health and Wellbeing, alongside researchers, artists, and Indigenous knowledge keepers worldwide. The collective examined the unsustainability of what it called "modernity-coloniality" and produced widely used pedagogical frameworks and books, including "Towards Braiding" and "Towards Scarring Our Collective Soul Wound." In 2026, the collective formally closed its active work with a written closing statement, though the site remains live with its resources for a further year.

(concluded 07/2026) 10x100 was a learning-centred coordination framework, co-developed by Caroline Paulick-Thiel and Indy Johar, helping projects and organisations align collective action around what it called "the polycrisis." Structured around recurring "quarterly" gatherings — outward crisis forecasting, inward reflection, forward strategy — it was adopted by initiatives including Berlin's PLAN B civic project and Mannheim's regional food-system team. After ten quarterlies and roughly 1,000 days, the initiators closed the initial cycle in a final session reflecting on the format, describing it as offering "space to pause, question, and recalibrate" rather than fixed solutions.

The Museu do Amanhã is a science museum in Rio de Janeiro, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and built on the historic Mauá Pier as the anchor of the city's port-area revitalisation. Opened in December 2015 with support from the Roberto Marinho Foundation, it blends science, art, and technology to explore possible futures for humanity over the next 50 years, drawing over one million visitors within its first months.

Instituto Elos is a Brazilian NGO, co-founded by architect Rodrigo Rubido, that created the Oasis Game methodology in the favelas of São Paulo in 2003. Rebuilding to Last was a two-year Creative Europe-funded project (2022–2024) led by Trans Europe Halles in partnership with twelve organisations across Europe, including Institute for X and Stanica-Truc Sphérique. It explored how independent cultural centres could integrate ecological sustainability into their buildings and daily operations. The project concluded in October 2024 in Helsinki and produced the publication “TEH: Building a Cultural Regeneration Project for Europe”.

(ceased operations 01/2024) Circles UBI was a decentralised basic income system, piloted in Berlin from 2020 by the Circles Coop, allowing communities to create and circulate their own currency without state involvement. Over €2.3 million was raised to subsidise the Berlin pilot, although the project ultimately struggled to build a self-sustaining local economy. The Coop ceased operations in January 2024 due to financial constraints, although its wallet and marketplace tools remain in limited use elsewhere.

Open Collective is an open-source platform that lets communities, open-source projects and grassroots groups collect and spend money in full public transparency, without needing to set up their own legal entity. Originally built by a for-profit company, the platform transitioned in October 2024 to being governed by a member-controlled non-profit consortium (OFiCo). It now supports thousands of collectives worldwide, from software projects to local mutual aid groups.

Enspiral is a decentralised network of freelancers, entrepreneurs and social enterprises founded in Wellington, New Zealand, in 2010 by Joshua Vial. Structured to avoid traditional hierarchies, it supports members through collective decision-making tools it helped create, including the democratic platform Loomio and the collaborative funding tool Cobudget. Now spanning contributors across New Zealand, Australia, the Asia-Pacific region and North America, Enspiral describes its mission simply as supporting people to “work on stuff that matters”.

DisCO is a governance and economic model for worker cooperatives, offering a commons-oriented, feminist alternative to blockchain-based DAOs. Communities organise into small “DisCO LABs” of 4–20 people that can federate into larger networks committed to social and ecological work. The model grew out of the collective Guerrilla Translation and is documented publicly through the DisCO Manifesto.

(dissolved 11/2024) Sovereign Nature Initiative was a non-profit exploring how emerging technologies such as AI and blockchain could help nature become self-governing, reconfiguring the intersection of ecology, economy and digital tools. Its flagship project, DEEP, connected ecological data from conservation partners to digital creatives, funding biodiversity work through resulting digital products. Founded in 2021 with a three-year mandate and based in Amsterdam, SNI closed after distributing digital products to over one million supporters, framing its mission as continuing through partners such as Aquasearch, AIMM Portugal and Kenya Wildlife Trust.

ÆRTH is a non-profit building AI-driven, interoperable models of Earth’s biological systems, from soil and coastal ecosystems to ocean health, using federated learning to simulate how environmental change cascades through ecosystems and economies. Founded by Adina Popescu, who previously built planetary-scale environmental data infrastructure with NASA/JPL and marine science institutions, the team combines earth science, AI engineering and sustainable finance expertise. ÆRTH positions itself as connecting scientific data directly to investment and policy decisions.

The Regenerative Communities Network is an initiative of Capital Institute connecting place-based communities working to apply regenerative economic principles at a local level. Launched in October 2018 with seven founding members, it has since grown into an independent network exploring how regenerative finance and living-systems thinking can shape real neighbourhoods and regions. Its own dedicated domain is no longer active; it currently operates as a page within Capital Institute’s site.

Sisyphos is a Berlin techno club in a converted dog-biscuit factory in Rummelsburg, run since 2009 by Sommerleuchten e.V. and now Sisyphos Event GmbH. Known for parties running without a break from Friday night through Monday, it operates across five floors — including an outdoor "Strand" area — and has become one of the city's most recognisable club-culture institutions over 16 years.

Holzmarkt is a cooperative-run urban village on the banks of the Spree in Berlin, built by former members of the legendary Bar25 club after that site was threatened with sale to developers. Around 100 members each invested in the cooperative, with one vote per member regardless of shareholding, and the village opened in 2012 with a nightclub, theatre, bakery, kindergarten, and studio space. Connected to Garbicz Festival and to Bachstelzen — the operator now running Kreatur — through the same Bar25-descended team.

Tal der Verwirrung is a Berlin collective and event production crew describing its work as "space, time, and room for dance, play, performance, and all kinds of art and creativity." Active since at least 2011, they host events throughout the year — including large multi-artist gatherings at venues like Kater Blau — culminating each summer in their own festival, and run a music label releasing tracks by artists connected to their scene.

Neu am See is a non-profit cultural association based on a 7-hectare former campsite by a lake in Neuendorf am See, Brandenburg, run since 2014 by a mixed community of craftspeople, architects, artists, and scientists. It hosts workshops, artist residencies, environmental education, and cultural events aimed at strengthening exchange between Berlin visitors and the local Spreewald community. It is itself a member of Netzwerk Zukunftsorte.
